The first full-court PGA Tour event of the new season will gather a crowd of players who want to start 2025 on a solid footing.
While last week the Sentry had just 59 of last season’s top players and winners, the Sony Open has a full field of 144 players, many newcomers just starting their PGA Tour careers.
And although there is no this week Mega purse worth $20 million at last week’s Signature Event, a strong result could still set the tone before the PGA Tour reduces the number of players released from 125 to 100 after this season.
And that’s crucial for someone like a local Hawaiian Chan Kim, second-year Tour member who this week passed for the first time as a member of the PGA Tour.
“It’s the start of the season with the aim of getting some points, which really boosts my confidence,” the 15-year-old pro said on Saturday.
This week, Kim finished 53rd after his 68th Sunday, which will net him about $20,000 when everything is finalized. Nothing crazy, but his year starts off on a positive note as he heads to the airport for a red-eye to go to American Express next week.
Below is the full breakdown of this week’s payouts Sony opens in Hawaii. The total purse is $8.7 million.
