Sauerbrunn retires after ´truly humbling´ USWNT career

Becky Sauerbrunn has called time on her career, stepping away from both the Portland Thorns and the United States.

The 39-year-old has played in every season of the National Women’s Soccer League to date and has earned 219 international caps.

But he announced Tuesday that he was retiring from the sport after winning three NWSL championships, two World Cups and an Olympic gold medal.

Sauerbrunn said of his USWNT career: “I learned early on that we’re all renting our jerseys.

“To once wear the US Soccer crest is an honor and privilege for which I am forever grateful. The fact that I’ve done it over 200 times is really humbling.

“I have competed against and learned from some of the greatest players and leaders this game has ever seen, and I feel fortunate to have played a small role in the history of this program.”
