Brazil legend Ronaldo hailed “the best black and Brazilian player in the world” as Vinicius Jr paid tribute on Tuesday.
Vinicius was named FIFA Men’s Player of the Year 2024, two months after missing out on the Ballon d’Or.
The Brazilian winger led Real Madrid to La Liga and Champions League glory, scoring in the European final against Borussia Dortmund.
He received his individual award at the FIFA ceremony, however, and former Madrid and Selecao superstar Ronaldo was delighted to see his compatriot honoured.
Vinicius has been the subject of racist abuse, including a match against Valencia in 2023 that resulted in three football fans being sentenced to eight months in prison.
So Ronaldo sees the 24-year-old’s victory as a victory, even for the “anonymous Venetians” who have suffered.

“Speaking of regaining respect for Brazilian football, check him out there,” Ronaldo posted a photo of Vinicius on his Instagram page. @vinizer, highest respect!
“Sixteen years have passed since the World Player of the Year trophy last came to Brazil. Now deservedly in Vinny’s hands, that means much more than his decisive role in games and phenomenal numbers in the 2023-24 season. For awards, his talent will suffice, but his strength extends beyond the field.
“We’re talking about one of the most valuable players today, a victim of racism on television with unimaginable frequency.
“How many anonymous Vinicius does he represent? How many victims are scattered everywhere?
“A symbol of resistance and resilience, today Vinny leads the fight against apartheid in world football, where impunity is as damaging as aggression.
“And those who remain silent are no less racist. Exclusion – especially from entities and authorities that have the legal power to confront and punish such practices – reinforces the culture of erasure and disrespect towards black people.
“They tried to wipe you out, my friend. And you left a mark. The best players in the world are black and Brazilian.”
