Van Nistelrooy laments individual mistakes in disappointing Leicester defeat

Ruud van Nistelrooy lamented Leicester City’s personal mistakes as they fell to a disappointing 3-0 defeat at home to Wolves.

First-half goals from Goncalo Guedes, Rodrigo Gomes and Mathieu Cunha gave Wolves and new boss Bhitar Pereira a vital victory in their fight against relegation.

It was the first time in Premier League history that Leicester had lost at home to Wolves, having won four and drawn two of their previous six matches, while the Foxes’ first league defeat at home by three or more goals since May. 2023 against Liverpool (3-0).

It was Leicester’s second heavy defeat in a row after last weekend’s 4-0 loss to Newcastle United, and Van Nistelrooy was left frustrated at how easily his side gave up scoring chances.

“It’s definitely very disappointing,” Van Nistelrooy told BBC Sport.

“You notice how goals are given away, maybe more, because of individual mistakes, and that happened too much today.”

Prior to this game, Leicester had scored in all eight of their Premier League home games this season, having scored five goals in their previous two matches under Van Nistelrooy.

The Dutchman was disappointed that his side could not replicate the first two matches of his stewardship.

“It’s a disappointing one. We couldn’t give the visitors a good afternoon of football, which we were able to do in the previous two matches and take the place,” he added.

“It’s two setbacks now and big challenges ahead.”

Leicester’s next match is an away trip to league leaders Liverpool on Boxing Day.
