“He (Lukeman) has made it this far in the Grand Slam. I thought it was another bad draw this year,” Gilding said after the match.

“My finishing needs some work. I reached the first 180 meters and I think I was a little overly excited. Then in the second set I broke down, then I started playing seriously and stopped smiling so much.”

“I knew I had to really concentrate, you get into Ally Pally and the crowd and you get carried away. It’s special when you go up the hill and see the Alexandra Palace, you get butterflies in your stomach.”

“I need to improve my doubles game a little bit, if they play like they usually do, who knows where it will all lead.”

He talked about Littler and how some fans had told him about him before being held up as an omen for their tie.

“I had a chance and I managed to get my chance back in the Euro finals. It’s fantastic. I love watching him. You knew there was a buzz in the air, you knew it was going to be fantastic. When I was at the Matchplay World Cup last year some people were in the kebab shop next to the hotel and said look out for Luke Littler. I hadn’t really heard of him, but I knew he was playing. He’s a special talent.”
