A district court in Amsterdam sentenced the five to up to six months in prison on Tuesday Violence that erupted Around a UEFA Europa League Matches between Dutch teams Ajax and Israel Maccabi Tel Aviv in november
The riots, which caused an international outcry, left five people in hospital and 20 others with minor injuries.
More than 60 people have been arrested.
On Tuesday, the court sentenced one to six months, another to two and a half months and two to one month.
A fifth defendant received 100 hours of community service.
Several violent incidents between pro-Palestinian protesters and Israeli football fans occurred around the match.
Some of the violence was condemned as anti-Semitic, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu proposing the evacuation of Maccabi supporters. The violence, which has made global headlines, has damaged Amsterdam’s reputation as a beacon of tolerance and a haven for persecuted religions, including Judaism.
In a statement after the hearing two weeks ago, the prosecutors’ office said, “It appears that the violence arose out of intense pro-Palestinian sentiment and dissatisfaction with the situation in Gaza and associated anger against the Israelis present.”
The five defendants, who are all Dutch residents and aged between 19 and 32, are charged with public violence, theft and assault.
The Netherlands’ counterterror watchdog allowed the November 8 game to go ahead as there was no “concrete threat” to Israeli supporters and the match was not considered high risk.
Nevertheless, Amsterdam authorities banned pro-Palestinian demonstrations outside the Johan Cruyff Arena.
According to an investigation, authorities reported several incidents the day before the game, including Israeli fans tearing down a Palestinian flag from a building in Amsterdam and attacking a taxi.
Six other suspects, including three minors, will be tried at a later date. According to Dutch rules, juvenile trials are held behind closed doors. Police are continuing to investigate the violence and have released images of several suspects they want to identify.
