Ange Postecoglou gives update on transfer plans with Tottenham ‘a little bit short’

Tottenham the manager Ange Postecoglou Said his side ideally needed “strengthening” in the January transfer window, with the squad “still a bit small” ahead of a packed winter schedule.

Despite being the league’s top scorer with 39 goals in 17 matches, Spurs sit 11th in the Premier League with just 23 points.

And Postecoglou’s side have been plagued by injuries so far this term, with Christian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Dominic Solanc, Guiglimo Vicario and Son Heung Min all having spells on the sidelines.

The Australian noted how Spurs needed to “strengthen” the squad over the winter, saying the club had been “planning” for some time.

“It’s a lot [planning] We’re going to be close to where we are at this point,” he said.

“To be fair we are still a little short in some areas and we need to strengthen. But January is trickier in terms of what kind of players you can bring in.

“For us, the ideal – for any club, I guess – you want to bring in people who are going to strengthen you,” he added.

The 59-year-old cited Spurs’ busy winter schedule as another reason for the deal, with the club “still in the Carabao Cup semi-finals” as well as the Europa League and FA Cup.

“We’re all competitive, it’s not like our schedule is going to be easy at any point,” he said.

“So I think it makes sense. We will try to reinforce where and what numbers to wait for.”

Spurs will play six games in just 20 days between now and early January, including the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Liverpool, the north London derby against Arsenal and their FA Cup third round tie against the national team. League side Tamworth.

Their next match is against Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day, kicking off at 3pm.
