Phil Taylor’s record of 16 world titles will never be broken Luke Humphries who is the current winner and is eyeing more crowns.
He opened his PDC World Darts Championships ended with a victory over Thibault Tricole, who won 3-0 after nine games in a row, and will now return after Christmas in the third round against Raymond van Barneveld or Nick Kenny/Stowe Buntz. Although “Cool Hand Luke” he said in his post-match interviewhe thinks it will be Barney.
But now Humphries has new goals in mind, including defeating James Wade as champion, but Taylor is out of the question when it comes to world titles for either player, he said.
“I already have six major tournament wins under my belt; I’m not far from James Wade with 10, who is the third most successful darts player in history. Fifteen months ago, I didn’t win a single one,” he said after his victory over Thibault Tricole.
“I’m not intentionally going to dethrone James third,” he joked.
“It’s too far for any player in the world right now [Phil Taylor’s record of 16 world titles]” – Humphries told SportsBoom.com.
“If I retire in 20 years, what is a realistic goal for me? I would love to reach double digits. It’s hard to put a number on it – I could sit here and say 20 and not even get close to that, but then I could get to 40.
But while he will enjoy Christmas, he will be watching the tournament with keen interest. “I will be focused on myself, but I will also sit back and watch because I am a darts fan at heart,” he said. “It’s hard to watch when you’re not in the tournament.”
“I love seeing new faces, people you’ve never seen before, and that’s what makes this sport so great,” he said. “You have so many global players. Yesterday I met a guy from the Bahamas [Rashad Sweeting]and I’m really curious how he plays.”
