McCarthy was praised for helping Marcus Rashford to his best ever season in 2022–23, during which he scored 30 goals in all competitions.
He has not been afraid to speak out about Old Trafford since his departure, complaining of a lack of passion before Ten Hag was sacked.
McCarthy was asked by Portuguese publication Zero Zero this week why United have struggled to be more competitive in games.
“In modern football, I believe the players want to see a bit more passion in their coach,” McCarthy said.
‘They need to feel that the coach is with them and willing to fight with them.
‘Strategically, I feel that Eric is at the top. He lacks some of that fire, that passion. That’s where we differ, he and I.’
