Alan Shearer believes Aston Villa striker Jon Duran deserved a red card in Saturday’s heavy defeat by Newcastle United.

However, their hopes of getting a result at St James’ Park were effectively dashed just after the half-hour mark when Duran was shown a straight red card.

But replays appear to have rolled Duran’s left ankle, requiring him to compensate and find somewhere to land his right foot.

Despite this, VAR failed to overturn the decision, with Duran giving his marching orders.

Aston Villa lost the match 3–0, with second half goals from Alexander Isak and Joelinton completing a comprehensive victory. Newcastle.

Magpies legend Shearer reviewed the incident for BBC Radio 5 Live on Saturday.

The former England international felt referee Anthony Taylor’s decision was ‘harsh’ and sympathized with the situation Duran found himself in.

“I thought it was a little harsh,” Shearer (via Chronicle Live)

“How can you be sure that he has nowhere else to put his foot when you are traveling at such speed? Once the referee gave the red, there was no way to overturn it.”

Aston Villa intend to appeal against Duran’s three-game ban but as it stands, he will miss Premier League games against Brighton and Leicester, as well as the FA Cup third-round clash with West Ham – all at home – before returning. A trip to Everton in mid-January.
