After an epic season in 2024 Scottie Scheffler will start the new year on the sidelines.
News broke on Friday that the world No. 1 and reigning Fed-Ex Cup champion had withdrawn from the PGA Tour’s 2025 season opener, The Sentry, which will be held Plantation Coursein Kapalua, Maui, Hawaii, as a result of a kitchen accident he suffered on Christmas Day.
“On Christmas Day, while preparing dinner, Scottie suffered a stab wound to the palm of his right hand from broken glass,” Scheffler’s manager, Blake Smith, said in a statement released by PGA Tour. “There were small fragments of glass left in my hand that required surgery. He was told he should be 100% ready in three to four weeks.
Scheffler’s injury deprives The Sentry, an event commonly known as the “tournament of champions” in the field that features the previous season’s winners, of a golfer who won more than any other last year. During his hot 2024 campaign, Scheffler won seven times, including his second major, and captured Olympic gold, earning him PGA Tour Player of the Year honors.
Though he was often unstoppable on the golf course, Scheffler had a headline-making hiccup in May when he was arrested in a traffic accident while driving to Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville ahead of the second round of the PGA Championship. Although the charges against Scheffler were soon dropped, photos of the game’s best player in orange prison sweater was among the lasting images from the 2024 game.
As 2024 drew to a close, Scheffler showed no signs of slowing down. His last start in Tiger Woods’ Hero World Challenge was another victory, six shots clear of runner-up Tom Kim.
Fans will now have to wait to see Scheffler in action. His next scheduled start is Jan. 16 at American Express in La Quinta, California.
Meanwhile, Sentry will continue to operate without it. The tournament starts on January 2. The full pitch will be published later today.
