Vasily Lomachenko is wondering whether to end his sports career and has set himself a deadline for making this decision.
Lomachenko, a brilliant Olympic gold medalist in two weight classes and professional world champion in three weight classes, gave himself time after January 1, 2025 to decide whether to continue fighting.
The Ukrainian has not boxed since regaining the IBF lightweight world title when he defeated George Kambosos in May.
Top-ranking promoter Bob Arum, who represents Lomachenko, met with the athlete and his team after the last competition.
“They told me he was going back to Ukraine because he needed to be with his children who were at school and there were bombings outside, and he didn’t feel he was in the right place at that moment to talk about the future fight.” Arum said Heavenly sports.
“But he promised that after the first year he would make a decision. So what a decision this is [will be?] “I think it’s true that at that point he didn’t know what decision he was going to make.”
Arum will only put pressure on Lomachenko after January 1.
“I don’t want to disturb him, I don’t want to rush him. It’s great,” Arum said.
But he added: “I remember taking a photo with him and his father right outside the restaurant and it was almost like a goodbye photo. Maybe that’s what it was like.”
