Alisson urges Liverpool to create their own history

Alisson has urged Liverpool to make their own history this season and step out of the shadow of Jurgen Klopp’s Champions League and Premier League winning sides.

Liverpool maintain a six-point lead over Arsenal at the top of the Premier League as they chase their first league title since 2019-20.

Alisson was instrumental in Liverpool’s title-winning side as they lifted the Champions League trophy in their first season at Anfield in 2018-19.

This campaign, Alisson played nine league matches, Caoimhin Kelleher played eight while the Brazilian was sidelined with a muscle injury.

He returned to their starting lineup for the Champions League win at Girona in early December, and has conceded eight goals in the Premier League, excluding penalties.

It encountered (xGoT) from an image of 9.3 expected targets. According to Opta’s model, Alisson has prevented 1.3 goals this season.

On the eve of Liverpool’s visit to West Ham, Alisson said Arne Slott’s men could not think of the achievements of his predecessor Jurgen Klopp.

“That team was really special,” Allison said. “We have achieved great things. It was the first Premier League title in a long, long time.

“We won the Champions League together the previous season. There is no comparison between the two situations.

“What makes me happy is the players in this team – we have the quality to do something special. The most important thing is to have the commitment needed to win something.

“We don’t have to compare ourselves to teams of the past. This season, we have to make our own history in this group.”

Implemented a more patient style since Slott took the reins, Liverpool’s passing accuracy has gone from 85.8% last season to 86.5% this campaign, while they average fewer quick breaks per Premier League game (2.1) than in 2023-24 (1.1).

“I don’t think it’s too similar,” Alisson said when asked about Liverpool’s change of style.

“A few players still play in the team but we have a slightly different style, more possession. Before, it was really straight forward, a lot of transitions, a lot of intensity.”
