These could be an important few weeks in your life Łukasz Małyr in the coming month. With the 17-year-old heading into the 2025 World Darts Championships as one of the main favourites, he is currently second favorite to win the prestigious BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, something no darter has ever done before.
The closest a darts player came to being recognized by BBC SPOTY was the moment Phil Taylor he finished second in the public vote in 2010, when jockey Tony McCoy took the crown. But according to the legendary 16-time world champion, Littler would be well advised to ignore the hype around the BBC Awards and concentrate his efforts entirely on the upcoming PDC World Darts Championships.
“I would advise him not to go to it,” the 64-year-old tells TalkSport, insisting that Littler has opted out of attending the ceremony in person on Tuesday, December 17. “I’ll be honest. Look, there’s half a million pounds on the table. I wouldn’t do anything, you know what I mean.”
However, more than just the £500,000 cash prize on offer for winning the PDC World Darts Championships at Alexandra Palace, Taylor notes all the additional benefits available to a potential world champion, again urging Littler to remain focused on that goal.
“If I win and stay focused, I’ll just make a video and thank you very much,” Taylor concludes. “But it’s not just about half a million pounds, it’s about the publicity you’ll get, which he doesn’t need at the moment, and your fringe benefits.
For darts fans who want to support their sporting hero, voting is open on the day of the show, with the final winner announced live on BBC Sports Personality of the Year on Tuesday, December 17. Viewers in the UK will be able to watch the action and see if Littler wins the double award of famous BBC Sports Personality of the Year and BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year on BBC One and BBC iPlayer from 7pm GMT.
