That situation is unlikely to continue so Midlands outfit the Black Cats have reopened their files on Patterson, 24, who is also an option for Spurs.

Patterson won’t come cheap, however, as he signed a new long-term deal at the Stadium of Light last September.

After putting pen to paper, he said: “You can see the club going and it’s an exciting time to be here.

“Coming through the academy to where I am now has obviously been an absolute dream.

“When you first join a club at 10, you don’t really think much about the game Sunderland

Black Cats sporting director Kristjan Speakman said of the academy graduate: “He is establishing himself as one of the best young English goalkeepers.

“We have confidence in him and his ability to improve and he has confidence in us as well, which I think is important.

“As an Academy graduate, we couldn’t be happier for Anthony.

He and his Sunderland team-mates will return to action this afternoon, traveling to the Bet365 Stadium for the game Stoke City.
