Clayton reveals origins of Ferret nickname during latest Autocomplete Challenge

Jonny Clayton took part in the latest episode of the PDC AutoComplete Challenge, answering questions that would be asked on Google and asking them to players.

So far, the likes of Nathan Aspinall and Michael van Gerwen have taken part, with Clayton being the newest topic and one of the first topics being his rugby play.

“I remember the veteran game, which is over 40 years old, and I was in good form as a youngster. When I played the game I thought I should have been there but I couldn’t get there and that told me it was the end of Jonny Clayton’s rugby days,” Clayton told PDC.

Work as a plasterer

One of the main reasons for Clayton’s promotion was that he was still working among the donor elite as a plasterer for Carmarthenshire Council, and it’s not a part of his life he was willing to give up.

“I thought long and hard about it, but I’m not going to. I like what I do and it works. It takes me away from darts. I get bored very easily.”

“I’m taking unpaid leave, but it helps me a lot. It’s a minor maintenance expense, but I still enjoy it. I’ve been doing this my whole life, I don’t see any reason to change. It suits me right now, so ‘I’m going to keep doing it.’

The beginnings of Candace

Clayton followed the trend of giving nicknames to animals, but instead of a snake it was “Ferret” and revealed the origin of the nickname.

“It’s because of the rugby. You come out of youth rugby at 19 and then you go to the next level. Now that has changed and I don’t think I was nine stones soaked.

“Everyone was taking the microphone away from me, there was so much laughter because I was playing scrum-half and kicking the ball. They said if you ever played Gladiators, you could be Candace and you know when things are going to work out.”
