Paul Lim sealed a 3-2 victory, defeating Gary Stone and advancing to the quarterfinals of the tournament WDF World Championships proved that age is just a number. Even after 70 years, it still delights Lake scene.
He said earlier in the week that this would be his last ever World Championships, but based on the darts he is producing, he still has a good chance of claiming glory at Lakeside this week.
“I never expected this. I have always told players when they play darts, I still enjoy it. I always say that you have to enjoy the game to appreciate it. Winning is of course a celebration, but every time you lose you have to feel it’s part of the game. I have gone through a lot of failures to become what I am now. All I can say is enjoy this moment because it is a memory for me. I have been playing darts for over 40 years. If it comes it comes and if it doesn’t come you work hard. There are no excuses, just improve and that’s it,” Lim told WDF Darts.
He also said he felt Stone was intimidating him, but he wasn’t sure why.
“I felt it. I had the impression that Gary was intimidated. But I don’t know in what sense. While playing darts, I felt depressed for a while because I had a chance to win two sets in the second set.”
“As time went on, I came back, I felt it. I think he was intimidated, I don’t know why, but Gary is a good player. But at this point, what comes comes, that’s all.”
However, as he approaches the finish line with Jarno Bottenberg, he refuses to be drawn into his pace for the simple reason that he feels he can’t catch up.
“I’m going to play at my pace. I’m not a fast player. I’m 71 years old, I can’t chase him, so I’ll play at my pace, play darts, and if he comes, he comes. That’s all.”
