Machin books Quarter-Final with McGuirk as De Graaf sails through Lakeside opener

Was a success for Piotr Machin, Aileen deGraaf AND Jason Brandon all this towards reaching the quarter-finals of the 2024 tournament WDF World Championships On Lake as Thursday afternoon ends.

Machin, a former BDO World Trophy champion, will now face him Shane McGuirk after winning nine of their last 10 games and receiving a bye Cliff Prior 3-1. After losing the first set, Machin came back even, finishing with 97 and 113 for a 3-0 score.

From there, the match became a whirlwind as Machin hit a brilliant combination of 112 and 76 en route to a 3-1 third set.

He came close to the finish line, winning the final set 3-0, starting with a 15-darter before a layup. There were 20 darts left, but Prior had no answer. Now he comes face to face with the hotly tipped Irishman.

While 2023 finalist Aileen de Graaf has made it through to the last eight defeats Mayumi Ouchi in straight sets to reach Lakeside’s ninth quarterfinal.

She started off strong, winning the first set 3-1. Ouchi held better in the second set, but De Graaf was particularly good in her own shot, winning it by an average of 93, hitting 16 darts, hitting a double 18 with Ouchi far behind as she was on the Dutch’s darts throughout.

Jason Brandon made a huge impression on his debut and wiped the floor with it Sybren Gijbels ending the Belgian’s streak with a 3-0 victory. His average rating is 87, and so far in the round they have been better than Schweyen and McGuirk. Starting off tied, he pinned 96 and 124 to get to a 3-0 opening lead. Before everything went haywire.

Brandon, however, scored 72 points and doubled his lead as he led 2-0. After losing the first part of the last set, it was a procession as he won legs in 16, 17 and 15 break shots before consolidating with 171, 140 and a double 20 dart in hand. Excellent from an American.
