Vincent van der Voort believes compatriot Wessel Nijman could pull off a surprise at the World Darts Championships. The young Dutchman made a strong impression in his first Pro Tour season, including winning the Players Championship.
On the podcast Darts is still going strongVan der Voort was asked which darter could become a sensation at Alexandra Palace. “Then you have to pick someone outside the top 32, and the name that comes to mind for everyone is Wessel Nijman,” replied “Fast Vinnie.”
Van der Voort cited Nijman’s draw as the reason for the 24-year-old Dutchman’s good result. “He goes against people who are not in good shape. Of course, there is always the question of whether he can do it at the World Championships because there will be a lot of pressure on him as well.”
Nijman made his World Darts Championship debut last year, losing in the first round to Steve Beaton. This time he starts against South African darts player Cameron Carolissen, and victory would mean a meeting with Joe Cullen. There are definitely chances in this match, as Cullen hasn’t shown great form this year.
Recently, Nijman showed well at the Darts Grand Slam. Although Nijman lost all group matches, he recorded averages of 106, 105 and 111. Van der Voort does not believe that these results will have a negative impact on Nijman.
“He’s too balanced for that,” Van der Voort said. The darter from Purmerend then recounted an incident from earlier this year when he was in a car with Nijman. “He didn’t do well, but he saw in the charts that he was quite near the top in terms of average. Then he said, This can’t go wrong any further. But he’s a realist and he also knows that if he keeps throwing that kind of average, the wins will come naturally.”
