Darts referee makes history as first openly gay man to officiate

He remembers that he “inspired him”. fellow Welshman and Rugby World Cup referee, Nigel Owenswho revealed his sexuality in 2007.

“He broke barriers for me when he refereed the World Cup final in 2015. I felt I had a lot in common with him. I could look at him and say, ‘he’s reached the top and I can too.’

Huw added that darts, but sport in general, still had a long way to go to ensure the game was accessible to all.

“As we look at everything that is happening right now with the LGBTQ+ discussion in sports, the fires are still raging. I hope to help break down barriers for the next generation.”

Before the start of the final, Huw wrote on his blog, external that if he could say anything, he would say it to “gay boys and girls who worry that their sexuality may close the doors to worlds they would like to be in but no longer feel they can do, this is not the case”.

He added that “worlds like the sports world were open to everyone, both gay and straight, no matter who you are, you can achieve in any world you want, and most importantly, you can belong.”
