‘Absolute disgrace Rangers are in this position’ – what now for Philippe Clement?

“It’s finished. This is the end of Patrick Stewart. This can’t continue, it’s impossible.”

Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd pulled no punches in his Sky Sports post-match verdict as Clement again urged his team to come back, regroup and recover.

The Belgian coach also reiterated that this is a new, young squad hampered by injuries.

The latter cannot be doubted – although Dundee is already missing 10 first-team players – but Clement has been assembling his squad for over a year.

Growing pains are no longer an excuse.

So what progress occurred during Clement’s reign?

He had one trophy in the League Cup but lost it last month in a controversial final defeat to Celtic.

When he took over in October 2023, Rangers’ city rivals were seven points ahead.

Last season, the purpose of the trophy remained in question. In January this year, Celtic Park was already connected to satellite navigation.

Yes, Clement eventually defeated Celtic on January 2 at Ibrox, but since then his team have dropped four points. One step forward, two steps back.

“We can talk about progress, but there is none,” Boyd fumed. “You completely destroyed Celtic a week ago and you’re struggling for confidence?

“There were no problems with confidence before the Celtic game. This can’t be a one-off.”
