Chelsea’s defense is currently going through some injury crises, forcing the club to consider recalling on-loan Trevor Chalobah.
Injuries to Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashle have left Enzo Maresca’s side short of options at centre-back, forcing the club to rely on academy graduate Josh Achim Peng, who made his Premier League debut in the recent 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace.
Chelsea view Trevor Chalobah as short-term solution to injury crisis
According to the report london footballThe current situation has led the club to consider ending Chalobah’s loan deal with Crystal Palace this month.
Chalobah joined Crystal Palace on loan at the end of the summer transfer window after he was deemed to have exceeded his requirements by new Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca.
The Blues boss opted to pull Chalobah out of pre-season preparations due to redundant defensive options at the time, including Levi Colwell, Tosin Adarabioyo and Axel Disasi. He was one of several players to be expelled from the Blues’ first team.
Since his move, the 25-year-old defender has flourished under the guidance of Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner. Chalobah has played 12 times for the Eagles and contributed 3 goals, including the key goal in the recent 2-1 victory over Southampton.
While Palace reportedly want to keep Chalobah until the end of the season, the club are said to be prepared for his potential departure, with other defensive options in the squad.
For Chelsea, bringing Chalobah back to Stamford Bridge would solve their immediate defensive problems. The versatile Englishman can play at the back and provides much-needed Premier League experience compared to the relatively untested options Maresca currently uses.
Maresca impresses in first season at Chelsea
The former Leicester City coach performed well in his first season with the Blues, losing only 4 league games and ranking 4th in points, only 4 points behind second-placed Arsenal.
However, their recent form has been a bit unstable, with 2 losses and 2 draws in the last 4 games.
Maresca hopes to sort out his defence, regain his winning ways and continue his push for a top four finish and possibly more.
