Steve Kerr’s 90-year-old mother is one of thousands of people who have brutally lost their homes fires rage in Los Angeles area.
“My mom is in good hands, but her home is gone,” the Golden State coach said Thursday night before the game Warriors played Detroit Pistons. “I talked to my siblings on the phone for a long time.”
Kerr said his mother, Ann, left home in Pacific Palisades after the evacuation order was issued earlier this week.
“This is my hometown,” he said. “All my friends who come from there, almost all of them lost their homes – their family homes, their childhood homes. Our high school no longer exists. The city looks like it has just been completely destroyed. It’s surreal and devastating.
“Fortunately, almost everyone escaped. But it’s hard to even fathom how Pacific Palisades is rebuilding and becoming a thriving community again. It’s just shocking.”
Pacific Palisades borders Malibu, about 20 miles (32 km) west of downtown Los Angeles. It includes hillside streets lined with tightly packed homes, along winding roads set against the backdrop of the Santa Monica Mountains, and extends to beaches along the Pacific Ocean.
Fast-spreading flames are consuming homes and businesses, and nearly 180,000 residents are fleeing smoke-filled canyons in picturesque neighborhoods that are home to many celebrities.
Many of the massive fires started on Tuesday and burned down on Thursday, fueled by powerful Santa Ana winds.
At least five people are dead and thousands of buildings have been damaged or destroyed.
