MANCHESTER, England – Ruben Amorim dismissed the prospect Manchester United strengthening the squad in the January window, but insisted that after speculation on this subject he wanted to keep his best players Kobby Mainoo may leave Old Trafford.
United’s precarious financial situation means they would have to consider a serious offer for any member of the first team, as well as hampering attempts to bring in new players this month.
“I don’t remember saying clearly that I wanted new players,” Amorim said at a press conference on Friday.
“I said that sometimes the profile of this system is different and players come here with a different idea for the game. I don’t remember saying it so clearly that I wanted new players.”
Securing the exit route for Marcus Rashford in January would help United’s finances. Likewise, it would enable players like Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho leave for a reason First leagueThe principles of profit and sustainability make the sale of university graduates particularly profitable.
Amorim was asked specifically about Mainoo’s future, and while the Portuguese coach said he wanted to keep the English midfielder, he admitted the club’s financial situation could take a decision from him.
“Our idea is always to keep the best players and players we build at the club, but we know where the club is currently,” Amorim said.
“We’ll see. I really like the players, especially the guys from the academy.
“I really love my players, I want to keep them, especially the talented ones. It’s a difficult moment, I’m really happy with Kobbi, he’s making progress.”
A united face Arsenal on Sunday in the third round of the FA Cup and is looking to win at the Emirates Stadium for the first time since January 2019.
Amorim has vowed to pick his strongest team, despite preparing for crucial games against them in the Premier League Southampton and Brighton next week.
“We want to continue [in the FA Cup]”, said Amorim. “We know we have a really strong game at this stage, but we want to win and continue to improve the team and the results.”
He added that the only change to the starting lineup he could confirm was his inclusion Altay Bayindir instead André Onana.
