Duke’s Cooper Flagg scores ACC freshman record 42 points vs. Notre Dame

Cooper Flagg won ACC freshman with a career-high 42 points to help No. 4 Prince stop Our Lady on Saturday, 86-78and remain undefeated in conference play.

The 6-foot-9 preseason Associated Press All-American made 11 of 14 shots, 4 of 6 three-pointers and 16 of 17 foul shots. He also had seven assists and six rebounds, resulting in an all-around game in which he single-handedly destroyed the Notre Dame defense.

Khamana Maluacha added a season-high 19 points for Duke (14-2, 6-0).

Markus Burton scored 23 points for the Fighting Irish (7-9, 1-4), who made 14 of 23 three-pointers and kept going to keep the game interesting late in the game.

Notre Dame: The Irish were down 14-0 and led by as many as 18 in the second half before making it a two-possession game late.

Duke: The Blue Devils are racing through the top half of the league standings, shooting 51.6%, winning four of their first five ACC games by 20 points or more. This time it was more difficult, and Notre Dame (48.2%) became only the fourth opponent to exceed 40% shooting all year.

A key moment

Notre Dame came close 80-76 on Burton’s runner late in the game, but Flagg answered with two free throws and Burton missed the ensuing possession. That allowed Maluach to make two free throws with 15.8 seconds left to restore the lead to two possessions.

Flagg has made 12 of 22 three-pointers over the last six games. He scored just 8 of 36 points in his first 10 college games.
