What to make of Max Homa’s Cobra Golf debut

It’s been an offseason of change for Max Homa, who showed up at his first PGA Tour event in Kapalua with a new swing coach (John Scott Rattan), new clothes (lululemon), filling container and – perhaps above all – new golf clubs.

Starting in the new year, Homa signed long-term contract with Cobra Puma Golf play at company clubs and wear Puma golf shoes. It was by far the loudest announcement of any equipment change by any player this offseason, especially considering Homa had been playing titleholder since his days as an amateur.

Last week, Homa finished at 19 under at Sentry, which was only good for the T26 trim at the Kapalua Bird Festival. But on this week’s “Fully Equipped” episode of GOLF, co-hosts Kris McCormack and Wadeh Maroun believe there was a lot to say about how Homa enjoyed the new year.

“You have to be excited about the fact that you played really, really well,” Maroun said of Homa’s week. “You can trust the irons you test and the woods you test. I think he used wedges as well.

The only remnants of last year’s Homa bag are a prototype Scotty Cameron T5.5 mallet and a Titleist Pro V1x golf ball. The Cobra batons he has in his bag contain something new from the company DS-ADAPT LS driver and prototype set of 3D printed irons.

He also immediately became the face of the Cobra’s Tour, with Rickie Fowler and Gary Woodland probably no longer in great shape, while Lexi Thompson is retiring from regular LPGA competition.

“Cobra needs someone to come out and do something really, really good for her,” Maroun said. “They’ve had a really nice history over the last few years, but they just didn’t have the professional presence to really kick it into gear after losing Bryson. [DeChambeau]”

McCormack added: “With Max now on the staff, we have a young player who can use social media, connect with people, has personality and I think he’s a great addition.”
