Great Britain Jacob Fearnley on Monday, he caused a shock at the Australian Open with a knockout Nick Kyrgios following his long-awaited return to his home Grand Slam.
Fearnley, ranked 540th in the world, eliminated Kyrgios in straight sets to advance to the second round, with the enigmatic 29-year-old Australian often showing his anger during the match and clutching himself over an apparent injury.
Kyrgios entered the Australian Open having played just two singles matches since October 2022 due to a series of career-threatening injuries, and looked out of shape, fitness and serving strength against the impressive Fearnley, who suffered just one fracture en route to the all-around tournament. Victory 7-6 (3), 6-3, 7-6 (1).
While Kyrgios teased a third-set rematch to get the stadium crowd roaring, the former world No. 13 and Wimbledon 2025 finalist’s hopes will now turn elsewhere.
