Neymar will not join Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez at Inter Miami, with manager Javier Mascherano claiming it is “impossible” for MLS to sign the Brazilian.
Mascherano, who played with the trio, among others Barcelona at the end of his career and became Inter Miami manager at the end of 2024, he stressed that financial problems would simply make any move impossible.
This despite Neymar referring to the meeting with Messi AND Suarezemphasizing that while he is currently “happy” with Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia, a move is certainly not beyond the realm of possibility.
Messi and Neymar playing together at Inter Miami is ‘impossible’
“Of course playing with (Lionel) Messi and (Luis) Suarez again would be amazing,” Neymar said CNN. “They are my friends. We still talk to each other. It would be interesting to bring this trio to life.”
Mascherano, however, downplayed any transfer links with the Brazilian.
“We can’t talk about Ney because we have nothing,” Mascherano said Reuters. “Obviously Ney is a great player. Every coach in the world wants him right now, but you know the MLS salary cap rules. That’s why we can’t think about him at the moment.”
Each team in MLS can have three Designated Players, with sides allowed to pay three stars above the $683,750 salary threshold.
At the beginning of 2024, Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets and Leonardo Campana were Inter Miami’s three designated players, meaning both Jordi Alba and Luis Suarez were earning below the teams’ salary cap.
Although Campana has already left for the New England Revolution, it doesn’t look like there will be another designated player spot on Inter Miami’s roster.
Instead, the site belongs to David Beckham Looks like I chose Player model with initiative U22allowing clubs to use up to two Designated Player roster spots, up to four U22 Initiative roster spots, and an additional $2 million in general allocation money (GAM. The Designated Player model only allows for three Designated Player roster spots and three roster spots U22 Initiatives).
Therefore, as Mascherano emphasizes, keeping Jordi Alba and Luis Suarez at the club, while complying with the MLS salary cap rules, signing a contract with Neymar is simply unfeasible.
IN FourFourTwoFrom his point of view, it is certainly a pity that Messi and Neymar cannot play together at Inter Miami for now, although that does not mean that something cannot happen in the future.
