Michael van Gerwen AND Vincent van der Voort they have been best friends for years. Although they can sometimes get on each other’s nerves as the current number one in the world Luke Humphries revealed, including a showdown between the pair.
Luke Humphries defeated Michael van Gerwen 17-15 in last year’s World Matchplay final. The two men get along well, although Humphries has a strong opinion of his Dutch colleague. Asked on Happy Hour Podcast who has the biggest ego in darts and called Green Machine the only player “Cool Hand Luke”, he didn’t hesitate. “Well, it’s simple; Michael van Gerwen,” he said.
“He wears it really, really well. It fits him in a strange way. He just… I think it’s Dutch too. They’re kind of like that. He’s got a great friend in Vincent. I think Vincent is really good to him.”
“Because I think he once told me, Vincent, a story where he actually punched Michael in the face a few times,” Humphries added. “Like he hit him.

“It’s not like I totally beat him. But I think that first time was really early and then they became friends. And then, about eight years ago, I think Michael got a little sad – his ego got a little bigger – and Vincent just hit him because I think he was disrespectful to Vincent and Vincent didn’t like it. Honestly, he’s one of the coolest people you’ll ever meet. He speaks directly and is very funny.
Nice guy
Humphries and Van Gerwen meet weekly on the Pro Tour. “We get along really well. He’s a really good character. But yes, Michael definitely has the biggest ego. Vincent had to hit him to calm him down!” Humphries can still laugh about it, smugly.
