Earlier this week, Fowler was spotted testing a never-before-seen 13.5-degree two-wood Cobra prototype dubbed “The Deuce.”
GolfWRX.com caught up with Fowler on Wednesday to get his first shot after testing out the new Cobra club. He said the nickname is still a work in progress and the goal is to avoid the ever-popular “mini driver” title. Several companies have introduced such clubs over the past year, and Cobra is the latest to do so. The clubs are becoming increasingly popular because of their versatility off the tee and fairway and because they are easier to work from right to left than with a driver.
“That area, kind of a 2-wood mini-driver, the ‘Deuce,’ whatever you want to call it, has kind of become a hotter club, just because of the versatility,” Fowler said. “And even more so in a left-to-right wind and still being able to get there in a decent manner. Not in terms of the driver, but just another option.
“I hit it for the first time on Thursday last week, I was able to do a little testing here (at The American Express), but a lot of good things. I’m getting very similar numbers and launch conditions to the TaylorMade (BRNR) head I was hitting. (“The Deuce”) can shoot a little higher, which isn’t bad, especially if you’re hitting it from the deck.”
Fowler said he likes the “nice and simple look of the new club.” The Cobra FutureFit33 hosel allows Fowler to adjust loft and lie independently.
