Why AmEx leader Sepp Straka shaved his head ahead of season

Sepp Straka has improved everything heading into the new year, especially at the top.

As the 31-year-old Straka, who leads by four shots through three rounds, explained Saturday to The American Express, it was a proactive move.

“I was kind of losing my hair, so I thought I’d deal with it,” Straka said. “So yeah, I just went ahead and shaved it off.”

Straka made his clean debut in Hawaii, where he went T-15 at The Sentry and T-30 at the Sony Open. He performed much better in La Quinta, California, where he took the first 54-hole lead of his PGA Tour career. Both of Straka’s previous wins, the 2022 Cognizant Classic and the 2023 John Deere Classic, are back in fashion.

Part of the credit goes to Brian Harman, Straka says, for his encouragement.

“He was actually one of the guys who convinced me,” Straka added. “For years he kept telling me, ‘At some point it’ll go away,’ and when I realized he was right, I thought I might as well just give it up and shave the ball off.
