Rory Mcilroy did not look for a new golf ball, but sometimes the change finds you.
The four -time main master has gone from Taylormade TP5X on TP5 for This week AT & T Pebble Beach Pro-AM. Early phrases were positive during the first round on Thursday, when Mcilroy registered 66-fund 66 in Spyglass Hill Golf Club. Opening 66 included Mcilroy’s The hole of the second career in one on PGA Tour. For golf in the data, Mcilroy gained 2.27 strokes on the approach and 1.65 from the shirt during the first round.
After the round, Mcilroy revealed how the equipment changed.
“In a sense, I came across it,” said Mcilroy on Thursday. “One day I was playing at the grove. It must be Thursday last week. I just started hitting the TP5 chips instead of TP5X and I really loved how I felt. I didn’t really tested TP5 2024, but I liked how he reacted around the greenery. And then I began to hit him like 60- and 70-jard shots, and this disappeared with much lower launch, but spinier.
“Then I just conducted tests with him and compared him with TP5X. I used TP5 2019, and the difference between TP5 2019 and TP5X 2019 was large in terms of spin rates and starting angles. It seems that it probably launches the lower degree for me, but the spin speed is very, very similar, which I really like. Yes, I did some testing with it, I really like it. It seems that they also do not lose speed with the driver, even though it is a golf ball with lower compression. I thought I had four rounds this week, without cutting, I might as well try and see how it will be. I played 18 years in Pebble on Tuesday, I played 18 yesterday in Cypress and of course I played here today and it was really, really good. ”
The addition of TP5 is only one of the reasons why Mcilroy enters the season feels sharper than in the past at the beginning of the season.
In October, the North Irishman spent three weeks in the simulator to take care of some mistakes in his return. The impact on the simulator allowed Mcilroy to focus on the movement of his body and swing and do not worry about changing him to shape his shot.
This work in the studio, combined with a more recreational turtleneck in December and the change of ball, which felt prepared to attack the early part of the PGA Tour season instead of using it to tune his swing.
“Maybe I’m not looking so often,” said Mcilroy after his round. “I was very busy in this October, in which I did a lot of work. Then in December I played golf, which I usually don’t play, so I felt it wasn’t more sharp. It is mainly a social turtleneck, but I had a trip to Ohoopee, I had a member of Grove, I had my journey to New Zealand, I played showdown in Vegas, so I played a lot in golf until December.
