U.S. Open becomes first major to create LIV Golf exemption

USGA created a waiver category for LIV golfers to compete in the U.S. Open, making the tournament the first of the four majors in golf, introducing the official pathway for golfers to the Saudi-backed Tour.

The 156 player field position at the Oakmont Open in Pennsylvania from June 12 to 15 will be awarded a non-waived golfer, with Liv Golf’s top three in individual rankings as of May 19.

Visits to two players at the Shinnecock Hills Open in Southampton, New York will increase next year, including the final individual standings in 2025 and the LIV golfer admission on May 18, 2026.

In both cases, these attractions are suitable for players who have not been exempted and are also among the top three.

“USGA continues to evaluate the pathways that exist to ensure that those who perform best have the opportunity to compete in our national championships,” said USGA Chief Champion Officer John Bodenhamer.
