The team announced the move Friday night.
Detroit is scheduled to face Campbell’s former team, the Toronto Maple Leafs, on Saturday night.
Campbell has played two games for Grand Rapids since being cleared to return from the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program on waivers in mid-November.
The 32-year-old has a 2.55 goals against average and .919 save percentage in those two games with 57 saves on 62 shots.
Detroit signed Campbell to a one-year, $775,000 contract in July. Prior to joining the Player Assistance Program, he played in one preseason game for the Red Wings against the Buffalo Sabers, allowing two goals on 22 shots in 24 minutes and 46 seconds of playing time for a save percentage of 0.909. .
The Michigan native made his NHL debut in 2013 after being selected by the Dallas Stars in the first round (11th overall) of the 2010 NHL Draft.
Campbell, who previously played for the Stars, Los Angeles Kings, Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers, has appeared in 176 career NHL games since 2013 and has a .909 save percentage.
