Ampthill v Hartpury in the Rugby Union Championship had to be abandoned after referee Alex Thomas was hit by a clearing kick in the first half.
He appeared to be knocked out when he was hit by Hartpury center winger Harry Bazalgette, with the visitors then leading 14-0.
Thomas was treated on the pitch before being taken off on a stretcher.
The match, played in the second tier of English rugby union, was abandoned minutes later.
“We appreciate that the decision is disappointing for fans who attended the match, but our priority is the health of the players and officials,” Bedfordshire Ampthill said in a statement.
“Our thoughts are with Alex for his speedy recovery.”
Hartpury, who started the match fifth in the table and two places above Ampthill, took the lead through Ethan Hunt.
Aristot Benz-Salomon added a second shortly before the incident ended the match after 28 minutes.
