NEW ORLEANS — New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr was ruled out of Sunday’s match against Liverpool Washington’s commanders.
Carr, who was previously considered doubtful to play, suffered a left hand injury and was placed in the concussion protocol in the week leading up to the game.
This is the fourth game Carr will miss this season after three games with an oblique injury. Rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler he started those three games in Carr’s place, but the Saints opted to play the second-year quarterback Jake Haener v. Washington.
Saints interim coach Darren Rizzi said Carr was “doing really well” after going through concussion protocol and had just one step left to clear. On Friday, the team was still determining whether Carr could potentially be active and support Haener against the Commanders, or whether he could remain inactive and listed as the emergency third quarterback.
“We are not ruling Derek out of this game at this point. We’ll see how his arm progresses and gets better,” Rizzi said on Friday. “We can make him the backup quarterback, put him active in the game, or put him as the emergency third quarterback… If he’s fit and able to do it, it’s possible.”
Saints also activated their defensive play Tanoh Kpassagnon off injured reserve. Kpassagnon was sidelined all fall after tearing his Achilles in the spring, and this is his first game of the season.
