The deal won’t become official until Melton’s trading restrictions are lifted on Sunday.
Schroeder, 31, was traded from Toronto to Brooklyn at last year’s trade deadline after signing a two-year, $25 million contract with the Raptors in the 2023 offseason.
In his first full season with the Nets, the German guard has played a stabilizing role on a relatively young team. Schroeder averaged 18.4 points and 6.6 assists in 23 games, ranking 18th in the NBA, and shot 38.7% from beyond the arc.
The former 17th overall pick in the 2013 draft has helped Brooklyn get off to a 10-15 start, well above what most expected entering the year. He leads the Nets in minutes and assists and is third in points.
Whether Schroder starts alongside Stephen Curry or leads the second unit, he should be an immediate contributor for the Warriors. He could help improve Golden State’s middling offense, which ranks 18th in the NBA. It was their outstanding defense (fourth in the league) that led the Warriors to a 14-10 record, ranking fifth in the Western Conference.
Meanwhile, it’s a cap-clearing move for Brooklyn. By all accounts, they appear to be a team focused on acquiring assets to rebuild rather than competing for a play-in spot. Melton, who underwent season-ending knee surgery last week after tearing his left ACL in November, will be an unrestricted free agent after this year. Melton’s expiring contract, coupled with three second-round picks, is a decent amount of money for a player who isn’t part of Brooklyn’s long-term plans.
NBA Insider Jack Fisher It was also reported that the Warriors and Nets held talks with not only Schroder, but also Brooklyn forward Cam Johnson before settling on the guard alone. Fisher added later Two-way player Reese Beekman may also be headed to the Nets as part of the deal.
The Golden State Warriors will be the eighth team Schroeder has coached in 12 NBA seasons. Before joining the Nets, he played for Atlanta, Oklahoma City, Los Angeles Lakers, Boston, Toronto and Houston. He also helped the German team win the 2023 Basketball World Cup.
The Warriors host the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday, while the Nets face the Eastern Conference-leading Cleveland Cavaliers in Brooklyn on Monday.
