Diogo Jota scored a superb goal four minutes from time as Liverpool equalized for the second time.

Slaughter’s team didn’t look like a personnel disadvantage for much of the second half, but that ultimately cost them the comeback victory.

They still lead by five points chelsea Second-placed manager Slaughter was very pleased with his players and said Robertson’s mistake and sending off were due to injuries sustained in the opening minutes.

“The character that the team showed, that’s what Robbo showed,” Slaughter said after the 2-2 draw. “If you get kicked like that, with two nails in your knee, it might hurt for a few minutes. If you keep running it will get better and better, that’s what we’re hoping for.

“I only have one defender on the bench and he’s not a left-back, so you hope he can get through it and do well.

“But the moment I noticed he wasn’t quite himself, they put the ball in behind and he started running before he was able to get back to Ali (Alisson Becker).

“I thought ‘Well, okay, let’s see how it goes on’ and I think he conceded the red card pretty quickly.

“There’s nothing to blame him and the character showed a willingness to continue as he was hammered by two studs. Unfortunately this resulted in a deserved red card.”

Slott added: “I think it’s the complete opposite to Girona (midweek Champions League winners), I’m happy but not happy with the performance.

“I’m very happy with the performance here and I couldn’t ask for more, but certainly not the result because if you drop points at home against Fulham it’s definitely not what you expect and want.

“But yeah, being down by a goal twice, everything goes against you except one thing, and that’s our players and our fans, and I thought we were outstanding.”
