WPL auction: England’s Heather Knight misses out on deal

England captain Heather Knight and bowlers Lauren Bell and Sarah Glenn were among the players who missed Sunday’s Women’s Premier League auction.

Batsmen Maia Boucher, Sophia Dunkley and Paige Scholfield were also unsold in the auction held in India, as were fast bowler Lauren Filer and great-hitting South African Lizelle Lee.

However, all-rounder Danielle Gibson was bought by Gujarat Giants for around ₹28,000.

Gujarat was the most active team in the draft, making two of the biggest purchases.

They bought uncapped Indian all-rounder Simran Shaikh for ₹178,000 along with West Indian Deandra Dottin for ₹158,000.

“We have been following the local competitions, T20s and Challengers closely,” said Giants head coach Michael Klinger.

“She [Shaikh] excels in hitting power and hitting speed and complements other local Indian players [we’ve got in the squad].

“Having someone like her, potentially in our front seven, who can hit straight sixes, complements us. Our goal was this.”

Mumbai Indians have signed 16-year-old all-rounder G Kamalini for ₹158,000, while spinner Prema Rawat has signed with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (₹118,000).

England quintet Alice Capsey (Delhi Capitals), Nat Sciver-Brunt (Mumbai Indians), Danni Wyatt-Hodge, Kate Cross (both RCB) and Sophie Ecclestone (UP Warriorz) were signed last month.

WPL 2025 starts on February 21, with the final on March 16.
