The January transfer window will be a bit confusing again this year as the winter registration period is actually set to extend until February.
Clubs around the world will be keen to take the opportunity to strengthen their squads, with the transfer window opening in early January and remaining open for around a month.
Will there be any drama at the end of the transfer window this year? Here are the most important dates in your diary…
When does the Premier League transfer window close in January 2025?
The Premier League window will open Wednesday, January 1, 2025, which seems logical – but in reality it will end Monday, February 3, 2025 at 11pm UK time. The window will apply on the same dates across the EFL league, too.
Scotland, Germany, Italy, France and Spain will close their windows on the same day (February 3), although not necessarily at the same time of day.
Why close later when the usual January 31st is a perfectly good business day (Friday)? The answer seems to be “because.” Clubs across Europe preferred a slightly later closing date as not all clubs will open on January 1.
A few countries close the club a little later (for example the Netherlands and Portugal on February 4), but for Premier League clubs this only means that they can sell to these countries after the English deadline – do not buy.
Meanwhile, the Saudi Pro League will close the transfer window a little earlier, on Thursday, January 30.
This makes Türkiye the most likely Premier League dumping ground once the Premier League window closes: the window is only scheduled to close on Tuesday 11 February.
Can players be signed after the transfer deadline?
As for Premier League clubs, this is only if the players are free agents and the club in question has a place in their 25-man squad, otherwise they will have to wait until the summer.
This means that it is very unlikely that we will see any transfers after the January transfer window.
Players can be released by Premier League clubs at any time, but will generally not be able to sign for another club outside the transfer window of the buyer’s country.
