Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal suffered an ankle injury in the weekend’s defeat to Leganes, the La Liga club said on Monday, and the winger will be sidelined for three to four weeks, keeping him out of the top spot with Atletico Madrid.
Yamal, a member of Spain’s winning Euro 2024 team, left the field 15 minutes before Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat to Leganes, with the club saying the 17-year-old suffered a right ankle injury.
“Examinations carried out this morning revealed a first-degree injury to the anterior tibiofibular ligament,” reads a statement from the club.
“The player is expected to be sidelined for three to four weeks.”
Yamal previously missed three of the club’s games last month with another ankle problem, and with Barcelona’s decisive league match against Atletico Madrid on Saturday, he could also miss the Copa del Rey at the Barbastro Stadium and January’s Spanish Super Cup.
Barcelona’s defeat left them top of La Liga, with Atletico currently on 38 points and having played one game less, while Real Madrid are a point behind and also have a game in hand.
