Players on next year’s United States Ryder Cup team will be paid to compete once the package is agreed upon by the PGA of America.
It will be the first time in the 97-year history of the matches that either side was paid to play.
The 12 players will each receive $500,000 (£400,000), of which $300,000 (£240,000) will be donated to a charity or charities chosen by each team member.
The event’s organizer, the PGA of America, approved the package even though “no players requested compensation.”
Six players will automatically qualify based on the US Ryder Cup points list, with captain Keegan Bradley making six wild card selections.
“Players and captains, past and present, are responsible for making the Ryder Cup the most unique competition in golf and one of the most coveted events on the international sporting stage,” the PGA of America said in a statement.
Last year’s competition in Rome was notable for Patrick Cantlay not wearing an American team cap it was reported as a protest, external the fact that players were not paid for competing.
Last month, European international Rory McIlroy said he would pay to play in the games at Bethpage in New York.
“I would personally pay for the privilege of playing in the Ryder Cup.” McIlroy told BBC Sport.
“The two purest forms of competition in our game right now are the Ryder Cup and the Olympics, and that’s partly because there’s no money involved.”
