Manchester City wanted to bring in Dani Olmo in the summer, but the 26-year-old found his way back to the Camp Nou, spending much of his teenage years at Barcelona before moving to Salvador as a 16-year-old. Dinamo Greb.
Now, he may be heading for the exit again. Barcelona’s financial woes continue and Olmo’s move from RB Leipzig in August has loomed over them from the start.
The club’s ability to register players in La Liga has long been hampered by financial issues and Olmo’s future beyond December 31 remains in doubt. The Premier League could be coming soon.
Manchester City may get Dani Olmo bargain after all
Olmo’s La Liga registration is a temporary arrangement, only sanctioned due to Andreas Christensen’s long-term injury. The imminent extension of his registration will put them on blue alert for Barcelona and Manchester City, who are vying for his signature this summer.
In order to comply with annual club spending limits set by La Liga, Barcelona cannot register Olmo without cutting costs or increasing revenue. If their time runs out, they won’t be able to register for Olmo again and all bets are off.
City were reportedly ready to match Olmo’s Leipzig release clause, but the Euro 2024 winner returned to Catalonia despite obvious complications in securing his registration for future seasons.
They could benefit from a clause in Olmo’s contract. Failure to extend his league papers means he will be free to leave his boyhood club for a second time, according to reports.
Olmo is having a great 2024, at least on paper. In May, Leipzig once again qualified for the Champions League with this outstanding attacking midfielder and scored three goals to help Spain win the European Cup in Germany. Olmo scored the winning goal against France in the semi-finals, setting the stage for the final against England.
He had already scored five goals in 10 games for the Spanish league leaders in 2023/24, but injury and his ineligibility for the first two games of the season – after scoring three goals in the first three games – affected his performance. Play time.
If Olmo’s early commitment at Barcelona is cut short by issues beyond his control, a belated move to the Premier League would be a more than adequate outcome.
City’s problems on and off the pitch this season have been well documented. The Championship side are in sixth place after 16 games and have won one of their last seven league games.
