Former NFL quarterback Mike Vick has told people close to him that he plans to accept the team’s head coaching job Norfolk Statesources confirmed to ESPN’s Pete Thamel on Tuesday.
According to sources, the Spartans are finalizing a deal to hire a new coach.
Norfolk State officials declined to comment on Vick when contacted by ESPN, but said they plan to release a statement soon indicating they are going through the formal stages of the recruiting process.
Sources also told ESPN that Vick, 44, made the announcement Sacramento State officials that he was no longer interested in their head coaching position and informed them that he was taking a job closer to home at Norfolk State. Vick’s hometown of Newport News, Virginia, is approximately 20 miles from the Spartan campus.
As a player, Vick carried Virginia Technician to the 1999 national title game and became the first black quarterback to be selected No. 1 in the NFL draft. Since retiring in 2017, he has been an NFL analyst for Fox Sports.
News of Vick’s plan to take the job at Norfolk State was first reported by the Virginian-Pilot.
