First-ever ‘Marta’ award goes to Brazil’s Marta

Brazilian legend Marta won the first-ever “Marta” award this year for her solo goal against Jamaica in an international friendly match. The winner was announced on Tuesday at the Aspire Academy in Doha, Qatar.

Indian representative Dalima Chibber was present at the ceremony and announced the first-ever winner of the Marta Award.

The award was introduced in honor of its namesake, a footballer with a career spanning over twenty years.

The winning goal by Brazilian Marta was scored on June 1 this year in a match against the Jamaicans. She received the ball quickly and then passed the marker in a few steps. Then, from above the penalty area, she hit the ball into the top corner of the goal.

She announced that she would retire from international football in 2024, and the 1-0 loss to the USA in the final of the Paris Olympics was her last match for the Brazilian national team. Marta scored 119 goals for the national team.
