The palace is on the brink of an agreement with Croydon Council over a “construction management plan” which promises minimal disturbance to residents during the building period.
Reports say that the project will take two and a half years to complete.
And Building magazine claims the cost of renovations has risen to £150 million.

Palace chairman Steve Parrish said In the summer he wants the club to have “a stadium that the whole of south London can be proud of”.
He added: “The project is a bit behind, but it seems like there is a lot more going on.
“All the work we are undertaking now – moving offices so that everyone is together with the Palace Foundation, building a marketing suite, tanking the Holmesdale basement to create temporary away dressing rooms – these are all necessary steps.
“We need to increase the income of the club.
“We need to generate turnover and go to the same income as other clubs with bigger stadiums – Aston Villanewcastle, West Ham – some of which are looking to expand. It is very important to keep us.
“It’s about doing the right things for the club in the long term, including performing as well as we can on the pitch.”
