The issue of remuneration in the Ryder Cup is one of the most hotly discussed topics of the last few weeks.
A few weeks ago, Fr Telegraph announced that the PGA of America plans to pay each player on the U.S. team approximately $400,000 to participate in the 2025 Ryder Cup.
However, as first reported by Sports IllustratedTwelve former U.S. Ryder Cup captains have now sent a letter to the PGA of America lobbying against the plan.
“This was never supposed to come to light,” said the former captain, who wished to remain anonymous, when contacted by Sports Illustrated.
“It was done with the idea that you should be playing for your country and not for financial gain. We try to honor those who came before us and honor the Ryder Cup. It gave us many wonderful moments in life. We just wanted to show support.”
The former captain also revealed that if the money went to charity instead of the players’ bank accounts, there would be no problem:
“If that $400,000 goes to charity, that’s something else.”
The PGA of America currently gives each player $200,000 to donate to the charity of their choice to compete in the Ryder Cup.
