Manchester City have confirmed captain Alex Greenwood has undergone successful knee surgery.
The England defender injured his medial collateral ligament (MCL) during City’s Champions League win over St Paul’s last week.
Greenwood was initially feared to have torn his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) when he left the field on a stretcher after a collision with St Polten forward Melanie Brunthaler.
While City did not release a timeframe for the 31-year-old’s return, an MCL injury typically requires a short recovery period.
“2024 is not the end I planned,” Greenwood wrote on Instagram, along with a photo of her in a hospital bed. “I will work hard to get back on the field as soon as possible.”
The City captain joins the likes of Lauren Hemp and Khadijah Shaw in the club’s treatment room, with Gareth Taylor’s side second in the Women’s Super League and six points behind Chelsea.
Greenwood is likely to miss England’s Nations League matches against Spain and Portugal in February, but hopes to return in time for April’s double-header against Belgium.
