PGA of America tabs former president as its next CEO

One golf company CEO search is over.

The PGA of America announced Friday afternoon that one of its former presidents, Derek Sprague, has been named its next CEO, replacing the late Seth Waugh.

Sprague, who served as PGA president from 2014 to 2016, has served as general manager of TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, for the past seven years. Previously, he was managing director at Liberty National in Jersey City, New Jersey for two years, and before that, he worked at Malone Golf Club in Malone, New York, for 27 years, where he served as general manager and director of the golf club.

While president of the PGA, Sprague had his fingerprints on the PGA Junior League and Drive, Chip and Putt, and also served as co-chairman of the U.S. Ryder Cup Task Force.

Waugh announced in June that he was stepping down from the top position he had held since September 2018. Kerry Haigh, director of the PGA Championship, served as interim CEO.

Other golf leadership positions remain open, including the recently announced positions of CEO of the PGA Tour, CEO of LIV Golf and Commissioner of the LPGA.
