Manchester City captain, Alex Greenwood, is set for a significant spell after undergoing knee surgery. The England defender suffered a medial collateral ligament injury during the Women’s Champions League win over Austrian side St. Pölten in December.
The club has not revealed a time frame for the 31-year-old’s recovery but Lions fans will be concerned with the European Championships starting on July 2 in Switzerland.
Greenwood was a key part of the England side that reached the 2023 World Cup final and has been in fine form for City, who are second in the WSL.
In his absence, City lost to Everton in the WSL on Sunday and were comprehensive Defeated by Barcelona There are no other keys to Gareth Taylor’s squad on Wednesday, with injured first-team regulars such as Khadijah Shaw, Lauren Hemp and Vivienne Miedema.
A club statement read: “Manchester City can confirm that Alex Greenwood has undergone successful surgery on a medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury. Our captain was stretchered off in the Blues’ 2-0 UEFA Women’s Champions League win over St Poulten at the Zoe Stadium.
